The NSW Government, by NSW Fair Trading, is encouraging owners of pre-1980’s properties the opportunity for free asbestos sample testing, providing they register before 1 August 2016.
NSW Fair Trading has reported that home owners should act now as the NSW is considering new ways to protect the community from unknowingly purchasing a property that contains loose-field asbestos. The options being considered include:
- When selling a property, you would be obliged to confirm in the contract of sale if the house and improvements, the subject of the contract for sale, contains or is free of loose-fill asbestos; and
- A prescribed warning notice would be included in all contracts of sale to alert the buyers of the risk of loose-fill asbestos in pre-1980’s homes.
If your home is affected by loose-fill asbestos, there are financial assistance and support options available. The NSW Government has determined that demolition of affected properties and comprehensive site remediation are the best ways to ensure the safety of the community. Owners of properties that test positive for loose-fill asbestos have the option to sell either their land and premises or the premises only to the government.
The first step to registering for pre-sample testing is to visit loosefillasbestos.nsw.gov.au and click on “Register for a free test sample”. Alternatively, you can call 13 77 88.
